Ocicat - now offically cane free! [May. 22nd, 2008|02:28 pm]

ocicat
Saw my doctor yesterday, he thinks my healing is progressing well. My leg still doesn't go totally straight, and it gets stiff overnight or after sitting for hours, but it's quite strong now. It will never have the same range of motion my other leg does - I can normally hyperextend, but the replacement ligament will never be able to do that. Straight is as good as it will get. And it won't do that until the scar tissue built up on the newly drafted ACL replacement goes down.

But the best news is that I don't have to use a cane to walk anymore! I have to be really careful not to fall into a limp. Apparently if I let myself limp I'll "teach" my leg to walk in a limping stride. I'm probably done with professional PT, but will keep up with my swimming and home exercise routine. Lots of excercise biking in front of the TV/DVDs (if you wondered why I just bought a widescreen, now you know...)

They also measured me for a high tech "sports brace" that I'm supposed to wear while dancing, horseback riding, and skiing. Sadly, it won't be here in time for Folklife. Not that this will stop me from dancing there, it will just slow me down some.

We have a filly! She was born this morning, while nobody was in the barn but the horses. Mamma snuck the birth inbetween the 4:30-5am watch shift and the 7am feeding. See [info]lady_equine's post for full details.

Pictures coming at some point soon...

Update [May. 19th, 2008|09:43 pm]

shellyinseattle
1.  New computer is now running, though not loaded with all the programs and pretty much none of our content.  Wolf worked very hard last weekend on it, so I stayed off it.  This does mean better email access, though, than before.   I'm still having to go online to the Comcast site rather than through Outlook.  But I can do it from home rather than through the library.  No Semagic yet to make my posts look better.

2.  Ordered a postage meter today.  We do some international mail, like Kobold Quarterly subscriptions, and keep having different postal clerks tell us different things --with one option costing us more time and money.  The Pitney-Bowes guy said that the local postmaster does have some discretion over exact interpretations.  Always thought things would be uniform with that.

I did realize that some post offices were better run when we moved a few years ago; I could tell by how well the mail got forwarded to our correct new addresses.

Also, you know you've been going to the post office too often when your two year old starts screaming, "NO" at the sight of it.  She only stopped when I assured her we were just dropping things in the outside boxes.  Yowch.  So it was high time we ordered a postage meter.

3.  Actually got out this weekend to shadow and veil's great Crafternoon/cocktail party.  Realized it had been since her last crafternoon in December that I had just hung out with friends without the small one.  Note to self...try to do this a little more often.   I have been going to calligraphy meetings without the little one, and that sometimes involves friends, but it's not quite the same as having no agenda except socializing.

Life in the Slow Lane [May. 19th, 2008|07:28 pm]

Rode in today, because it was perfect biking weather, and learned that the biking season has truly begun. How do I know? I was passed on the uphill by not 1, not 2, but three cyclists all burning up the hill.

I was content to continue in low gear up and up. I save my strength for the downhills.

I'm done... [May. 18th, 2008|11:47 pm]

ladieophilia
I tired of being sick. I mean, really now. My throat is still swollen, but I can at least swallow now. But now that I can eat, my stomach has decided it doesn't want to hold food. I can't keep anything down!
Yeah, because puking feels SO fucking good on a sore throat. Really it does.
Today all I have had has been juice because I need to get calories in somehow and it is easily absorbed. But I want food. I want the smell of food not to bother me too, which is really a problem as I am surrounded by food smells, especially the salt and vinegar popcorn that Boy likes to each so much.
My mouth tastes like shit, my tummy is in circles, and I am just plain tired of being sick.
I'm going to the mountains tomorrow dammit! I can't be sick!

On a random note, I have never been able to do a pull up. Even as a kid, I could hold at a 90 angle for ages, but I couldn't do a pull up...weird, eh?

Okay I don't have the kitten yet. PurrfectPals was at the street fair today though with actual kittens though and I was nearly ready to take one home in my backpack, if I had any supplies ready at home.

I'm also looking for someone willing to catsit while Andrew and I are gone on a couple trips planned this year. It's pretty much impossible to pick a time that won't be within a few months of a trip - Disneyland for my birthday, Dragoncon, and I assume something for the holidays.

Urg. I am full of food.

I spent the early afternoon at the cheese-fest at the market, and then the late afternoon/early evening grilling foods on my grandpa's barbecue. It's nothing special, but I inherited it a few years back whilst my grandma was cleaning out her house.

There was some Rock Band played, and a boardgame. In general, it was lots of fun and the food was yummy.

This week in movieland:

Gamers - If you've ever played a tabletop RPG, you need to see this movie. I laughed until my sides hurt. For a low-budget film, this one had some fantastic writing and totally appropriate casting.

Youth Without Youth - Ugh. I couldn't finish this one. Francis Ford Coppola has written and directed a self-indulgent, pretentious, wank-fest. From the quasi-arthaus camerawork to the unintelligible dialogue, this movie stinks.

Prince Caspian - Mediocre. Not bad, but not great. It follows the books reasonably well, which is part of the problem. In general, I bitch about filmmakers who deviate from the author's vision. However, when it comes to C.S. Lewis and his preachy parables, deviation would be welcome, if only to liven up the stiff, overbearing lectures on Christian morality.

There are probably others I'm forgetting. Those will have to wait for later. Now I go pass out into a food coma.

They say this is global warming; we are at the point of cooking.

"Is it hot enough for you?"
"No I like sweat dripping down the crack of my ass like niagra!"

I need to go swimming. 20-30 more minutes and the sun will be down far enough that I can do so ... *protects his back against the sun*

I can swallow! [May. 16th, 2008|01:21 pm]

ladieophilia
For I'm guessing much of hte glee for Boy, I can swallow again. For the last week my throat has been so sore, I couldn't even eat soup without it hurting really badly. I was constantly hungry because what I would eat, I usually couldn't finish because I couldn't handle the pain anymore. Even sorbet hurt.
There are times when I wish that I could take my tonsils out. I can't, due to the fact that I am allergic to anesthesia and would lose my voice if they were taken out (yay for lots and lots of puking and being put on IVs to stay alive for a week after surgery! Whoohoo!). This time it was only one that got swollen, which means it wasn't strep, it wasn't tonsilitus, but rather it had to have been tonsillolith. I can't even begin to tell you how painful this one has been. I haven't had one this bad since highschool! I mean, if it was anything other than that, which isn't contageous, then Boy would have gotten it. We share drinks and food and not to mention the odd kiss (which we actually don't do that often because neither one of us are big on the whole kissing on the lips thing, but the other night, in front of his friends, he kissed me, which kinda shocked me int hat gushy-grin sort of way).
But man alive, I started crying last night in my frustration. Boy was hungry and we passed by my favourite pizza place and he said, "let's go there!" Oh, it was so sad! I wanted to so badly, but I knew I was not going to be able to eat that night because swallowing hurt so much that as hungry as I was, I couldn't bring myself to even think about food. He just looked at me all teary-eyed and drove away. He stopped at a place he knew I wouldn't want to eat from anyhow and got himself dinner so that I didn't have to cook food I couldn't eat too.
He's kinda cute like that.

Congratulations California! [May. 15th, 2008|11:05 am]

The California Supreme Court just declared that gays have a right to marry! Excellent news! Of course, the fight isn't over, since apparently a constitutional amendment will be before the voters in November. But it seems that this is the final battle in this long story. And marriages performed between now and November may be legal even if the amendment passes.

Anyway, it's cause for celebration!
